## Objective

Students will be able to use knowledge of percents to solve a variety of real world problems.

#### Big Idea

You can’t leave 7th grade without….another round of percents!

## Launch

10 minutes

Opener:  As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (Instructional Strategy - Process for openers).  This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is mathematical practice 3.

Learning Target:  After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students.  In today’s lesson, the intended target is, “I can solve real world percent problems including tax, discount, percent change, and simple interest.”  Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

Since this lesson takes two days to complete all of the game questions, please see Second Day Opener for the start of day 2!

Notes:  This portion of the lesson will begin with six “throwback” percent applications, including notes and a sample question - MP 2 - (tax, tip, discount, simple interest, percent change, etc).  I will take student volunteers to run the notes, including demonstrating how to solve the sample problem.

Kaboom: To bring in sample test questions, I will split the class into two groups to play Kaboom.  During this type of review activity, I ask that all members of each group talk to one another and work through their reasoning and answers (MP 3), as I will call the student I want to the board from the group to solve the problem.  I have chosen 25 test prep questions, and I had trouble narrowing it down any further, so I will actually complete this game over two class periods.

## Summarize + Homework

Homework:  As we wrap up the game on day 2, I will pass out the homework sheet for students to complete.  Though they did just work on sample test items for two days, I do want them to take a few home to try on their own.
