Opener: As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener – Instructional Strategy - Process for openers. This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is mathematical practice 3.
Learning Target: After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended target is, “I can choose the correct procedure, resulting in a correct solution, given mathematical problems involving volume and surface area of prisms and pyramids.”
Math Hoops Review Game: This lesson does use the “Math Hoops” template that I downloaded from Smart Exchange, and I modify it to meet my needs in a particular unit. The template does include a teacher notes page that explains how the game and scoring work. Since this is a game, students will need to pay close attention to calculations and units (MP 6) to have their answers counted as correct, and will need to work as a team to determine the correct answer and be able to explain the reasoning that supports their answer (MP 1 and 3). Additionally, students should employ math tools such as drawing a picture or using a calculator to assist them in solving problems (MP 5). Some problems will require students to apply their knowledge, or abstract information from given models (MP 2 and 4).
Instructional Strategy - Table Discussion: To summarize this lesson, I will have students turn to their shoulder buddy and explain the process for finding volume and surface area of a prism or pyramid. I will also remind students of their test the following day!
