Students will be able to calculate the surface area of triangular and rectangular prisms, and apply this knowledge to real world situations.

Big Idea

Using data to immediately regroup, students are able to work on surface area of prisms at their own level – small group instruction, fluency practice, or applications of surface area.


10 minutes
  • Opener:  As students enter the room, they will immediately begin working on the opener.  For this particular lesson, students need to work independently on the opener, as they will be regrouped in a few moments based on their level of knowledge with the content. As students turn in the opener, I will quickly grade them and place them in piles 0/1, 2/3 and 4 correct. After I have all openers (or 5 minutes) I will move the students around to different tables. 
  • Learning Target: After regrouping the students, I will address the day’s learning targets.  In today’s lesson, the intended target is “I can calculate the surface area of triangular and rectangular prisms” and “I can apply my knowledge of surface area to solve real world problems.”


45 minutes
  • Versatiles: See video! During this lesson, I will be working with the students that need me, while other groups of students will be required to persevere with problems (MP 1) by reasoning with one another (MP 3) until they are able to develop a correct solution.  Attention to precision (MP 6) is also a key component of getting answers correctly - units, calculating areas of all sides, etc.

  • Class Discussion: To summarize this lesson, we will have a class discussion regarding one thing new that they learned today.  No matter what group a child was in, learning took place, and I want to hear about it!
