As students enter the room, they will be asked to discuss the topics of mean, median, mode, range, mean absolute deviation, interquartile range, center, shape and spread with one another.
After completion of the opener, I will address the learning target, “I can calculate and apply measures of center and variability to solve problems.”
Test: Today students will take the Measures of Center and Variability Test. The test consists of 15 multiple choice questions. For multiple choice questions, I use the website www.masteryconnect.com, see my Instructional Strategy clip on Mastery Connect for more information.
Even though today's focus is a test, the mathematical practices are still present. The questions on the test require students to analyze both verbal and mathematical models, and abstract information and draw conclusions, as well as persevere with the problems until they can reach an answer - mathematical practices 1, 2, and 4. As with any test, precision is important - mathematical practice 6. Students will be permitted to use a calculator as well, mathematical practice 5.
