SWBAT understand big ideas about linear functions.

Get kids to think big. Illustrate some enduring understandings about how changing m and b change a linear function... and then link this to some real-life examples.

Each day, students complete a warm-up that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material. Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts.

I really like the warm-up problems today, because they push kids to apply their understanding to unfamiliar problems - in this case, focusing on matching the equivalent graphs and equations... I like to ask: "Which answer choice is wrong, and why?" Kids then use reasoning about the positive or negative nature of the slope, as well as where the line crosses the y-axis, which enriches their understanding of multiple representations of linear functions.

In this case, I always ask kids - what do you think is a popular wrong answer, and why? Get in the kid's head - why would they choose this? This pushes them to explain their reasoning and critique the reasoning of others.

The homework file is a resource that generally includes 5-7 problems that consist of problems related to this lesson, as well as spiraled review. I also give the kids the answers to the problems.

Sometimes, the HW file is a take-home assessment.
