SWBAT define and graph linear functions.

Big Idea

What should we do if we encounter an equation that - gasp! -- does not have y isolated? Kids learn how to manipulate the equation into slope-intercept form, without using that vocabulary... yet.


10 minutes

Each day, students complete a Warmup that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material.  Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts.

In this case, the warm-up gives the chance for kids to practice graphing from the previous day, in this case with a fractional coefficient for the slope.  Ensuring this skill is solid is essential to success in today's lesson.


A few areas that I zero in on as a go over this problem and check for understanding:

- do students understand that the y-intercept is easily found on the coordinate grid?

- do students check that if the slope is positive, the line is sloping upward?

- can students handle fractional coefficients?
