# Collect like terms first

Lesson 3 of 16

## Objective: SWBAT solve equations that require collecting like terms

*75 minutes*

#### Warm-up

*10 min*

Each day, students complete a warm-up that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material. Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts.

Today's warm-up pushes students to distribute a fractional coefficient through parentheses, which I want students to be automatic at. I push this bit by bit, consistently - rather than all in one huge lesson -- to ensure that students develop comfort gradually, and with repeated exposure and different uses.

#### Homework

*15 min*

The homework includes questions related to this lesson, as well as spiraled review. I also provide answers to the problems on page 2.

Henry - thanks so much for your kind note. I am so glad that you are finding the materials useful from as far away as Australia! Hope all is well.

Best,

I am a novice teacher beginning around 10 weeks ago in a Graduate teaching program, I am mature aged 53 y.o. and have been nursing for the last 20 years, new adventure into teaching H.S.. I find your material very useful and plan to use it in the future. I do not know enough to make any useful critical comments.
