Unit Description

15 day unit on place value concepts that includes writing/saying numbers in standard form, word form and expanded form. The unit also covers comparing whole numbers and ordering whole numbers. Below are a list of key understandings for this unit. - SW understand that place value explains how numbers are constructed and broken apart. - SW understand the value of a given digit, and its role in determining the overall value of the number it is in. -SW come away with stronger number sense, especially in regards to comparing the value of numbers. -SW understand that place value is applicable to many different math problems, and that they will be using it for the remainder of the year. A detailed look at this unit including layout of lessons, performance tasks, and GLEs/Common Core Standards covered are in a word document.

Lessons

Place Value: Week 1 Lessons Resources: 8

SWBAT convert numbers from standard form to word form. SWBAT convert numbers from word form to standard form. SWBAT identify the place value of a given digit in numbers to 999,999. SWBAT evaluate the value of a given digit according to its place value.

Place Value: Week 2 Lessons Resources: 7

SWBAT convert numbers from standard form to expanded form. SWBAT convert numbers from word form to expanded form. SWBAT covers numbers from expanded form to standard form. SWBAT locate numbers on a number line.

Place Value: Week 3 Lessons Resources: 9

SWBAT round numbers to the nearest given digit. SWBAT estimate sums and differences. SWBAT compare the value of 2 numbers. SWBAT order numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. SWBAT take unit assessment with a score of Basic or above.
