### Unit Description

The electromagnetic lessons can be used to supplement your present lessons. The remainder of the lessons are best taught in sequential order. Students will be guided in developing an understanding of energy, energy conservation and then be asked to put their knowledge to work through the creation of roller coasters and marshmallow catapults.

### Lessons

Electromagnetic Spectrum and Parts of Waves Resources: 1 YWBAT: 1) Identify the parts of transverse waves 2) Explain the relationship between wavelength and wave frequency 3) Apply your understanding of frequency to explain the organization of the EM Spectrum 2,394 Webquest: Investigating the Electromagnetic Spectrum Resources: 3 This webquest should be completed after you have done several lessons on the basics of waves and EM Spectrum. Students will love the infrared radiation imagery and will appreciate not listening to you discuss waves and EM for yet another day.
There is also potential to use the UV indices to create a data-driven investigation on UV exposure. More to come on that later.

YWBAT: Analyze infrared photography to determine how heat transfer occurs.
YWBAT: Explain how UV radiation can affect human health.
YWBAT: Analyze NOAA UV indices to determine how latitude, seasons and UV exposure are related. 770 Using Net Energy Graphs to Teach Energy Conservation Resources: 1 YWBAT: 1) Analyze a net energy graph to determine what happens to energy when it it used to do work or cause change. 308 Energy Transformations YWBAT: 1) State, explain and give examples of single and multiple energy transformation. 2) Examine the energy transformations in a device that you use everyday. 515 Using foam roller coasters to investigate and understand potential and kinetic energy Resources: 1 YWBAT: 1) Build a foam tube roller coaster that gets a marble to successfully go around one loop and slowly drop into a cup 1,576 Day 2: Foam Roller Coasters Resources: 1 YWBAT: 1) Observe the Green Lantern roller coaster to determine the level of excitement and size of loops and hills during the beginning (after drop), middle and end of ride. 2) Cooperatively design and construct a giant roller coaster using foam insulation and a marble. 639 Energy and Amusement Park Rides Investigation Project Resources: 1 YWBAT: Investigate and explain the energy principles that make your 2 favorite amusement park rides work 316 Using Infrared Camera Videos to Introduce Heat Transfer Resources: 31 YWBAT: 1) Predict and explain, using evidence and models, how thermal energy transfers in nature NGSS: MS-PS1-4, MS-PS3-4, MS-PS3-5 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.1 170
