Unit Description

Students learn to identify, describe and explain emotions through Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, and its graphic novel edition. Students learn to understand emotional decision-making and to evaluate responses to emotional situations. This unit specifically targets students on the high-functioning end of the Autism Spectrum (Asperger's), and students who live in conflict-ridden, emotionally toxic environments.

Students will learn and categorize vocabulary used in the graphic novel of Sense and Sensibility.

Students will have both visual and verbal understandings of the time period and social context of "Sense and Sensibility"

Students will understand how fair and unfair judgments are made of people and of situations, and will be able to apply the process and consequences of making judgments to real life.

Passive, Aggressive, Passive-Aggressive: Sense & Sensibility Resources: 5

Students will be able to identify reactive behavior on a spectrum from passive to aggressive, will be able to understand the pros and cons of each disposition, and will be able to analyze reactive behavior in literary characters

Students will recognize manipulation of one person by another and apply this concept to analyzing literary interactions

Grief Resources: 3

Students understand what causes grief and how it manifests in various stages. Students act out various scenarios in which grief is expressed and give appropriate responses.

Forgiveness Resources: 2

Students understand the meaning of forgiveness, relate it to their experiences, and debate instances of forgiveness in Sense & Sensibility

Impertinence and Indifference to Others Resources: 3

Students explore British social customs through improvisational acting and understand limits on pertinence and how they are reflected in Sense & Sensibility

Emotional Acting Class Resources: 2

Students demonstrate comprehension of emotional vocabulary and strategies via improvisational acting

Using Our Emotional Vocabulary Resources: 4

Students demonstrate mastery of emotional vocabulary and employ this to analyze short films and take vocabulary and essay assessments
