Unit Description

During this unit, scholars will be reading the novel Esperanza Rising and analyzing the events and characters throughout. Students will work to answer the essential question: What forces a character to change and grow? This unit focuses on looking at surprising and important events as well as analyzing character reactions and thinking about what they reveal about the character. In additon, students will be discussing character feelings in response to people, and events, and analyzing character strengths and flaws.

Lessons

Lesson 1-Analyzing Characters Resources: 3

SWBAT analyze the Mexican proverbs that begin our new novel and determine the meaning behind them. SWBAT identify the characters in the novel and characterize them based on proof from the text of their actions, words, or thoughts.

Lesson 2-Analyzing Esperanza Resources: 5

SWBAT collect and record the thoughts and words of Esperanza in order to write a narrative journal entry.

Lesson 3-Internal/External Reponses to Conflict Resources: 2

SWBAT define what an internal and an external response to a conflict is. SWBAT identify and record protagonist internal and external responses to conflicts

Lesson 4-Symbolism Resources: 2

SWBAT define symbolism. SWBAT create meaning to symbols within our text. SWBAT discuss and debate why they think the author included the use of the fruits as symbols throughout this story. SWBAT identify and record Esperanza’s internal and external responses if more practice is needed after yesterday’s lesson.

SWBAT analyze events, feelings, and character reactions, in order to identify how they perceive a character, specifically what they admire or do not admire about them. SWBAT compare and contrast how they perceive Esperanza from the beginning of the novel to the current point in the novel.

SWBAT analyze a character’s thoughts, words, and actions to help choose personality traits that describe the protagonist. SWBAT identify and utilize textual evidence to support the personality traits they choose to describe the protagonist.
