Lesson Plan

 State Standard:  . 3.LT-EF.14

Standard Name: Identify character traits in a story.

Objective:Students will be able to identify the actions that drive the trait of a character

Do-Now:  Class connections:  (completing the round robin activity from the day before but you are to do it with the students names.  This can be a great way for you to get to know students in your class.  It is important that you set norms, and if you want you should use different colored pencils or markers so you can identify which student is making which comments.  This gallery walk showcase activity can be done during many lessons or icebreakers in the beginning of the year.  It is a great way to involve movement and have all student participating.  It is also a great way to encourage students who might be disengaged or intimidated by an activity to participate because they cans see other student’s responses to guide their thinking and answering.)

Today you can do a gallery walk and have each student take a blank piece of paper and have them put their name in the middle of the paper, each student will visit each student’s paper in the class and write a trait they believe best describes that person.

Opening: Look at your list of traits that your classmates have complied for you.  If you were to chose one character trait that best describes you what trait would you choose of your paper and think about why.  Have students share out why. Talk to students about how when they explain why they chose the trait that they did.

Directed Instruction:

Today we are going to discuss how you choose a character trait because of an action or using the plot of the story.  You simply do not just characterize a character as creative if they aren’t doing things in the story that lead you to have them being creative. Use examples from the do-now activity.

Guided Practice: Read a new read aloud or go through the read aloud that you read yesterday to introduce the traits and fill out a column on a chart paper that is labeled character action, character trait.  As you go through the story use guided practice to fill out the table.

Independent Practice:

Students use their independent books to identify character traits and cite reasoning to those traits.

Closing:  What type of action would infer the following traits.. list traits?
