Lesson Plan

State Standard:

5.LT-TN.12. Identify common structures in traditional literature (e.g., characters or story elements often come in threes — such as three bears, three sisters, three wishes, or three tasks — or are magic helpers — such as talking animals, fairies, or elves).

5.LT-G.2. Identify and analyze the characteristics of various genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, short story, dramatic literature) as forms with distinct characteristics and purposes.

Objective

Students will be able to compare and contrast fairy tales with other genres of literature.

Do Now

My favorite fairy tale is____because___.

Hook

Have students compare a traditional fairy tale book with a movie. Example: Cinderella

Direct Instruction

Brainstorm what students know about fairy tales, specifically the kinds of characters and plots. Create an anchor chart and post student ideas.

Define fairy tales (fairy tale is a fictional story that may feature characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, giants, gnomes, and talking animals, and usually enchantments, often involving a far-fetched sequence of events, things happen in 3 and 7’s).

 Show students graphic organizer.

Guided Practice

Read a common fairy tale.  Stop to discuss the elements you find from your anchor chart. Add them to the graphic organizer as you discover the elements.

When you are finished reading compare and contrast with a 3 way Venn fairy tales, with poetry, fables or non-fiction. Have students compare and contrast fairy tales with other genres.

Independent Practice

Give students a variety of books (including fairy tales). Have students sort the books by genre using the graphic organizer.

Sample Fairy Tale Books:

Three Little Pigs

Little Red Riding Hood

Cinderella

Beauty and Beast

Snow White

Princess & Pea

Puss and Boots

Closing

Have students explain their sort. Also discuss why it might be important to know the genre and features of that genre before reading.

Quiz/Assessment

Use observational notes to assess students during sort. You can also assess graphic organizer.
