Lesson Objective

Students will know and be able to think critically and analyze the authors use of illustrations, words and language to convey meaning.

Lesson Plan

 

 

State Standard:

5.IT-A.7. Determine an author's position (i.e., what the author is arguing), providing supporting evidence from the text.

5.LT-F.5. Identify the plot and its components (e.g., main events, conflict, resolution).

 

Objective

 

 

 

Students will know and be able to think critically and analyze the authors use of illustrations, words and language to convey messages.

Do Now

Write and reflect on the following quote in your journal:

“Hate is the friend of self-destruction”-Anonymous

 

Hook

Introduce the text The Yellow Star. Provide background information on World War II.

 

Direct Instruction

Read to where the King Christian rides alone. Stop and analyze what you know based on your reading.  Discuss the way the author is expressing information about the Danish people. Discuss what the author did well and what you notice.

 

Guided Practice

Read to where King Christian states that he will remove the Nazi flag. State your opinion. Then have students turn and talk to answer: What is your opinion and why? Think critically about the writing illustrations. If you were to evaluate these what would you say?

 

Continue reading and modeling critically thinking and analyzing. Infuse turn and talks to allow students to continue thinking and analyzing the text. Remind students to use what the author says and text features to support their thinking. 

 

Independent Practice

Allow students to choose their own historical fiction book from your classroom library. Have them think critically and reflect on what is happening in their text.

 

Closing

Have each student share a critical analysis from one of their books.

 

Quiz/Assessment

Have students write a reflection piece critically analyzing their independent reading book.

 

Post the following questions on the board:

Which of the following is Not a critical analysis of a book:

  1. the imagery was very compelling
  2. King Christian rode the streets
  3. the author created a strong sense of dram
  4. faces of people were powerful windows into levels of tension.
