Lesson Plan

Objective:  Students will be able to explain why it is important to learn a character’s background in order to understand how they will act in the future.
Lesson Plan
Standard/Code/Name:   Character Traits
Do Now (5-7 minutes):    Does a person’s background really matter in the way that they deal with events in their everyday life?? How does knowing a persons’ background help us to understand them more?
Opening (5 minutes):  As you know, we have been studying characters in fiction with the help of “The Tale of Despereaux,” we are going to continue this study but today we are going to focus on the background information that we get about the important characters in the story.
 Direct Instruction (I DO):
As we have learned, characters in fiction are a lot like real people. Characters, just like people in the real world are shaped by their past.
·        Go over some examples with the students of how they are shaped by their past.
As we start Book III, we are going to be introduced to a new character name Miggory Sow and given her back story. Throughout our reading today, I’m going to use post-its to mark important events in Mig’s background that will help me understand her character better.
·        Read through Chapters 24 & 25 and mark important information about her background.
Guided Practice (WE DO): Read Chapters 27 & 28 with a partner and mark where you saw Mig’s background influencing her present life. As you continue to read on, ask yourself; why is it important that we know these things about Miggory Sow? How did this influence what happened in the chapters you read?
Assessment:  Exit Ticket: How do you predict Mig will act based on what you know about her past? Why do authors give us background information about characters?
Homework: Interview a parent about their background, how has their experiences effected their decisions up to now? (see attached file)
Materials:
·        DO NOW
·        Post-its
·        Homework sheet
