Standard/Code/Name:  Cause and Effect (Chain of Events)

Direct Instruction:  Within Chapter 23 the author does a really great job illustrating and explaining cause and effect, or as she puts it, consequences for actions.  When she does this she explains that for every action that we have, there is a consequence, which in turn is the cause for something else to happen.  Let me give you an example:  Teacher gets up late for work (cause)àdoes not have time to make copies for the day (consequence)àdoes not have time to make copies for the day (cause) à unprepared to teach his class (consequence)à unprepared to teach his class (cause)à students become bored with the lesson and act out (consequence) à and so on and so on.

Discussion:  Read Chapter 23.  The author writes about a couple chains of events in this chapter, pick one and fill out the “Chain of Events” Flow Chart (see attached file).  What would happen if one of these events didn’t happen?  Would it change everything??  Discuss the end of Book II.

·        Can you think of a chain of events that happened in your life?  Turn and talk to your partner and I want you to come up with your own chain of events that could happen in school.

o       Start this with “I just walked into school…”

·        Have students share their own Chain of Events

Closing:  See how we all started with the same beginning event and how because we all had different experiences, the outcomes were completely different!  Do you think that if one event had changed or Roscuro possessed more positive character traits, things might have been different??

Independent Practice (YOU DO):  We have just finished Book II in "The Tale of Despereaux" I thought that we should continue displaying our skills or finding details and determining the main idea.  We have been creating our timeline to sequence the events in the story and displaying the main ideas.

I want you to partner up and I will give you a chapter.  You will:

·                          Depict the Chapter I give you with an illustration, or a series of illustrations (like a comic strip)

·                          These illustrations have to include your details and then the text that will be associated with the illustration will be your main idea statement.

·                          All the details can be found in your detail/main idea sheets you have already been filing in your folders.

·                          DO NOT PUT THE CHAPTERS ON THE ILLUSTRATION; we will be doing something with these later.

Materials:

·                          illustration sheet (see attached file)

·                          markers

·                          colored pencils

·                          crayons
