Lesson Objective

Hemp drops (CBD) and migraines

Lesson Plan

It stings, thumps, pulsates and presses - a migraine is often almost unbearable. Since the cause of migraines cannot be treated to this day, the main aim of therapy is to improve the quality of life of those affected. Is CBD suitable for this?
Despite all the research, the exact causes of migraines are still not clearly understood. Since migraines often occur in families, it is assumed that genes play a role, among other things.

What is a migraine?

Migraines are a type of headache that usually occurs and pulsates on only one side of the head. The pain increases with movement (walking, bending the head). The pain centre is often around the eye. At the same time, other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light often occur. The attacks can last between 4 and 72 hours.

What is the so-called aura in migraines?

Some patients have an aura before the migraine attack. This is understood to be perceptual disorders such as impaired vision or dizziness, which herald a migraine.

Medicinal effects of CBD

The medicinal use of the hemp plant was already successfully practiced 5000 years ago. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the second most important compound in the cannabis plant after THC. To date, 2 drugs with CBD have been approved in the EU. Legal hemp varieties that contain less than 0.3 percent THC are used to obtain CBD oil. Therefore, hemp drops do not get you "high" and their use is legal.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), CBD is neither addictive nor harmful to health.
Numerous studies examining the health benefits have also contributed to this view. CBD is one of the cannabinoids. These stimulate part of our nervous system ( endocannabinoid system, also called ECS for short ). The body itself can also produce cannabinoids.

The ECS regulates various processes in our body. Examples of this include:

  • Pain
  • nausea
  • stress
  • Mood
  • sleep

These effects are of great interest in medicine. That is why the effects of CBD are constantly being researched.

The link between ECS and migraines
Some studies have shown that cannabinoids compared to conventional painkillers to zwanzigma are more effective in inflammation. Thus, they could help reduce the need for conventional pain relievers.

There are numerous clinical studies examining the use of CBD for pain and inflammation.
It is believed that CBD blocks pain receptors in the brain and prevents pain from being passed on. This reduces the sensitivity to pain.

Nausea and vomiting

The happiness hormone serotonin regulates mood and emotions. In addition, this messenger substance also plays a central role in the sensation of pain and controls nausea and vomiting. Serotonin levels fluctuate enormously in migraines. Before the migraine attack, the serotonin concentration increases sharply. But then the level drops to an extremely low value.

The cannabinoids regulate serotonin levels.

Our body regulates the release of messenger substances such as serotonin or stress hormones via the ECS (endocannabinoid system). If the serotonin levels remain in balance, not only does pain improve, but nausea and vomiting are also inhibited.

Research shows in a fascinating way the connection between endocannabinoids and migraines. On the one hand, the exact ECS-dependent mechanisms underlying migraines have not been fully determined. On the other hand, the available results strongly suggest that activation of the ECS could be a promising therapeutic tool for reducing causes involved in migraine attacks.
