In this generation's era of economic recession and unemployment, there is one subject that is a hot topic, yet few are able to discuss it openly, or even learn about it: that of generational differences. It is a topic that not only affects individuals but can also have implications for the nation as a whole. Yet, when you take a GED or equivalent certificate course in this subject, you may be amazed at the opportunities that are presented to you. These differences are as vast as the generations themselves.

There are some differences in the way that each generation responds to situations. The Boomers, for instance, were among the last generations to fully grasp the impact of the computer on their lives. While they may be quick to blame the computer for everything from heart attacks to workplace accidents, the truth is that the computer was just a part of an integrated system.

On the other hand, the Boomers understood that technology can be used for good, and that it can help save them money in the long run. They learned how to adapt their methods to the new tools and techniques of the Information Age. The Generation Xers, who came of age during the first dot com bust, grew up in the aftermath of this crisis. While the older generation took a much more conservative approach to computers, the younger ones learned how to be adaptable. Although they may not fully understand all of the latest technology, they understand what it means to be technologically savvy.

Generations often differ as to what their priorities are. The baby boomers did not make any major changes in their lifestyles; rather, they tended to rely more on their education and jobs. As such, they were not concerned with the environmental issues or social problems that were of concern at the time, nor were they interested in issues concerning social issues, since they tended to think of themselves as a middle class, upwardly mobile group of people.

But, what about those who came of age after the baby boomers, who are now in their late twenties and thirties? They did have a much greater interest in social issues than the Boomers did. Their interest grew along with their education and careers, and they began to see these issues as important to their own well being. Not only did they become more aware of the social and environmental issues, but they began to question their roles in the family as well.

Boomer parents did not feel as if they had given their children a good start in life. That was just the result of a generation gap that had been left wide open in the past. Many of their kids grew up without the opportunities that Boomer parents had. They made no lasting impressions, and no lasting memories.

In contrast, baby boomers understood that they had failed to provide their kids with the foundation of life that was needed. They understood that they had failed to teach them the skills and attitudes that were necessary to live a fulfilling life. Their generation had learned to trust in a better future. With this understanding, they knew that they could succeed. Whereas Boomer parents thought that the world could be their oyster, the baby boomers saw it as a wonderful chance for them to learn to take responsibility for their futures.

Thus, when one chooses to take a Generational Differences training course, they will find that they have much to offer the rest of us. as, well. It is a time to get to know them as human beings, to understand their perspectives on life, and to gain a much deeper appreciation for what it means to be alive in today's world.
