List at least 4 strategies you use when you read.  (4 min)

Call to Begin

Thank you for your reading surveys.  Our goals for today are to review some reading strategies that you all already know and love as well as learn some new reading strategies.  We will also reflect on why reading strategies are effective.  (1 min)

Do Now Review

Brief share out: Which ones are always helpful?  Sometimes helpful?  Why? (5min) 

Learning Activities (group, independent, guided reading)

1- Collective Brainstorm:  Share and record reading strategies students use.  Post in room to keep adding to.

 

2- Notes/Handout PARLAP:

  • PARLAP: 
  • Page Walk (Read title, headings, and subheadings/Review pictures and read captions)
  • Activate Prior Knowledge (What do you already know about this subject?/Make predictions)
  • Read the entire text carefully
  • Leave tracks as you read (Note important & unfamiliar vocabulary/ Use codes to mark the texts/Ask questions and leave comments/ Actively read)
  • Answer the assignment completely
  • Prove your answers with evidence from the text

 

  • Model PARPLAP with teen book review of House of Scorpion (15 min)

 

3- Guided Practice: Partner work PARLAP with teen book review of When I Was Puerto Rican (15 min)

 

4-Share Out/Debrief/ Ask Questions about PARLAP (5 min) *It’s important students understand WHY we PARLAP.*

 

5-Preview HW: Independent Practice Book Review of  The Outsiders (5 min)
