Lesson Objective

SWBAT compute elapsed time using an analog clock to the minute.

Lesson Plan

Materials Needed: analog demonstration clocks, pencils, DN worksheet, clipboards, and IND worksheet.
 
Vocabulary: analog, elapsed time, minute, interval, hour, o'clock, minute hand, and hour hand

Do Now (5 min): Students begin by answering 2 (3 part questions) on elapsed time. This is one worksheet that should be cut in half.
 
Opening (2-3 min): Teacher begins reviewing some of the student’s answers to the Do Now.  Be sure to point out that these questions ask the student to what time it will be (future), what time it was (past), and how much time will pass. 
 
State objective at end of the opening, “ Yesterday we learning the steps to tell elapsed time to the minute with digital clocks. Today we are to calculate elapsed time, but with analog clocks. This doesn’t change the steps we learned, but we must first figure out the time before we start our steps!”
 
Direct Instruction (10 min): The teacher directs her full attention to the students and asks a student to read the steps to calculating elapsed time (should be a chart in the class). The teacher then puts two demonstration clocks on the board. She sets the times to the following, and then asks a two students to read the time. Then they follow the steps as outlined below. 
 
Example 1: 1:26 pm – 5:47 pm
 
1. Determine the start and end time, PAY ATTENTION TO AM/PM
2. Calculate the whole hours =3 hours (Note: may need to round up/down)
3. Count up the minutes = 34 + 47 = 81 min  (Note: adding the difference to first hour)
4. Convert to hours, if necessary = 81 min = 1 hour 21 min (Note: 60 minutes in an hour)
5. Add to find total elapsed time = 3 hr + 1 hr 21 min = 4 hrs  21 min
 
Example 2: 11:13 am – 2: 52 pm
 
1. Determine the start and end time, PAY ATTENTION TO AM/PM
2. Calculate the whole hours = 2 hrs (Note: may need to round up/down)
3. Count up the minutes = 48 + 52 = 100 minutes  (Note: adding the difference to first hour)
4. Convert to hours, if necessary = 100 min = 1 hour 40 min (Note: 60 minutes in an hour)
5. Add to find total elapsed time = 2 hrs + 1 hr 40 min = 3 hr 40 min 
 
Guided Practice (20 min): The teacher then splits the class into 3 groups: one group is responsible for what the time will be, one group is responsible for what the time was, and one group is responsible for how much time has passed. The teacher will use the problems below for the groups to figure out. Each group will rotate twice to ensure practice with each responsibility. It might be helpful to assign roles within the groups (recorder, calculator, etc).
 
1. ANALOG CLOCK set to 6:23

What time will it be in 2 hours and 5 minutes?
What time was it 3 hours and 20 minutes ago?
How time will pass between now and 9:04?
 
2. ANALOG CLOCK set to 2:56

What time will it be in 1 hours and 45 minutes
What time was it 2 hours and 50 minutes ago?
How time will pass between now and 4:26?
 
3. ANALOG CLOCK set to 9:48

What time will it be in 3 hours and 12 minutes?
What time was it 3 hours and 40 minutes ago
How time will pass between now and 10:17?
 
Independent Practice (5-10 min): The teacher will then pass out a worksheet the mimics the direct instruction and the guided practice. 
 
Closing (3-5 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to review objective for today. The students will then complete the 5 question quiz.
