Lesson Objective

Students will use knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to build and define words.

Lesson Plan

Connection (3-5 mins): Readers, we spent the past two days working on prefixes and suffixes.  Today, we will put all of our learning together to build multi-syllabic words.  These are words that have more than one syllable and are often more complicated to read and understand.  Remember, the more we know about how words are formed, the better readers we will become.

 

Teach (10-12 mins): Students should be seated on the carpet with a partner.  They will be expected to turn and talk to this partner throughout the lesson. Today is the day that all of our learning will come together.  You have spent time playing both the prefix and suffix game over the past two days.  Today, we will put both of these word parts together to create more amazing words. 

 

Teacher places the Word Building game board on the overhead as well as prefix and suffix word cards.  This time we play the vocabulary game, you will have to draw two cards, a prefix and a suffix.  Sometimes both of these cards will not work together and that is okay.  If that happens, just place one card back in the pile and draw another card. This lesson is about trying out new words and attempting to build words, we don’t have to be perfect at the beginning. 

 

Watch me as I show you an example.  Teacher draws a card from the prefix and suffix pile.  I drew the prefix re, which I remember means again.  I also drew the suffix able, which means able to.  Now I need to think of a root word that can be formed with both this prefix and suffix.  It is helpful to first think about words with just the prefix.  I could use redo, rewrite, or reuse.  All of those words use the prefix re but my challenge is to include the suffix as well.  I can try to put the suffix with the words to see which word makes sense.  Redoable could work and that word means to be able to do again.  I am not sure if this is a real word but like I said before, we are working on building words that make sense.  Do not worry about the word being in the dictionary just yet, we will tackle this problem in a later lesson. 

 

Now you try.  If we used write as the root word, what would the word become using the prefix and suffix that I drew from the card pile?  Turn and tell your partner the word and it’s definition.  Students turn and talk as teacher listens in to conversations.  Teacher calls on a student to share their response and talks through the word choice. 

 

Great work.  Let’s try with my last example.  The root word, use.  Try to put the prefix, root word, and suffix together and define the term.  Turn and tell your partner what you think and be ready to share your thinking with the group.  Students turn and talk as teacher charts their definition.  I am really impressed with your ability to build words and determine the meaning based on what we have learned. 

 

Today when you return to your seats you will play the same game with a partner.  Remember to write the words you create on a separate sheet of paper so that I can look at them after the lesson.  Off you go readers!

 

Active Engagement (15-20 mins): Students return to their seats to work independently.  During this time the teacher should conference with students or pull a small group of students for extra support. 

 

Exit Slip/Share (3-5 mins): I laminate the game boards so that students can write on the boards each time and then erase their writing.  They have to write a list of the words they created on a separate sheet of paper and I collect that sheet as an exit slip.  You may also informally assess by having students share out some examples of words they created and share the definition of those words. 

 

Reflection: My students really enjoy this lesson because they don’t have to return to their seats and complete a worksheet but they get to interact with a partner in a hands on way.  Again, I laminated the game boards which makes the activity more fun for students because they can write with dry erase markers and wipe off the boards each time.  It’s easy to create in the beginning of the school year and as the year progresses you can add new prefixes and suffixes to the game having it serve as a center throughout the year.
