Lesson Objective

Students will translate words into algebraic equations, Students will understand how words correspond with knowns and unknowns, variables, constants and operations

Lesson Plan

Name:  Anke al-Bataineh

Grade/Subject:        9-11 grade Math Intervention ("Algebra Skills")

Unit:     Algebraic Expressions

Step One:  Learning Objectives + State Standards

1.1.1 Use variables and appropriate operations to write an expression, an equation, an inequality, or a system of equations or inequalities that represent a verbal description (e.g., three less than a number, half as large as area A).

Step Two:  Materials and Resources

Modified worksheets from Pre-Algebra workbook                     Teacher-developed curriculum

Step Three:  Anticipatory Set

What does "translate" mean?                                                     What words do we already know that we can translate?

Step Four:  Input

Chart on board with key words "less than", "increased", "twice," etc.                                      model of 3-5 problems translation (basic)                                                                                                              model of 3-5 problems translation (medium)

Step Five:  Guided Practice or Coaching + Checking for understanding

Students work problems on white boards along with teacher.

Step Six:  Independent Practice or Assignment

Students will solve 5-20 translation problems                         Students will write own versions of problems (hopefully using characters/situations)

Step Seven:  Assessment/Evaluation + Closure

Students will attempt to solve similar problems taken from CAHSEE models                 Teacher will explain answers
