Lesson Objective

Students explore British social customs through improvisational acting and understand limits on pertinence and how they are reflected in Sense & Sensibility

Lesson Plan

Materials:

Computer with Internet Connection

Vocabulary Notebook

Student crosswords

Standards:

9-10LA2.5 Extend ideas presented in primary or secondary sources through original analysis, evaluation, and elaboration.

9-10LA3.3 Analyze interactions between main and subordinate characters in a literary text (e.g., internal and external conflicts, motivations, relationships, influences) and explain the way those interactions affect the plot.

Anticipatory Set:

Begin by reviewing vocabulary. Distribute the crossword puzzles students made to other students and allow 15- 20 minutes for them to solve it.

Input:

Show attached Powerpoint. Scroll through the site and discuss the general themes of propriety and respect for others.

Guided Practice:

Ask two students to come up in front of the class. If your students are interested, you can have two groups of students. On the board above one group write “Do!” and above the other group write “Don’t!” As you pass through dos and don’ts, have each side act out what you are reading about. This is likely to produce much laughter, which should help students get into the acting zone!

Independent Practice:

Students can quiz themselves here: http://education.guardian.co.uk/quiz/questions/0,,1947596,00.html

Students read novels/graphic novels according to classroom system.

Conclusion/Assessment:

Provide time to finish working on the crossword puzzles as needed.
