YWBAT: 1) Deliberate and determine the correct steps for designing a new technology

Lesson Plan

DO NOW: What is technology?

Review DO NOW: Anything that humans make to address a need or want; solve a problem

Ask: Who thinks that scissors are a technology?  Write down each of your reasons why or why not.

Next: Discuss your response to question prompt with partner

Discuss as a class:  By a show of hands, how many of us think that scissors are a technology?  Discuss answers: Yes, scissors solve an everyday problem.

Discuss the technologies or discoveries that lead to the development of scissors.  Common responses: fire, metal, knifes, rock knifes, melting metal, plastic (if there are plastic handles), etc.  Discuss the importance of other discoveries leading to human innovation.

Explain: Explain to class that there are certain steps that go into designing a new technology.  MA has 8 steps in their design process.  Each group (assign) will receive a pile of 8 papers that have one of the eight steps on it.  You and your group will deliberate and place the steps in order.  We will then share our order with the class and then have an opportunity to change our order, based on what other class members may have stated.
