If you haven’t already, ask students to make a descriptive drawing or symbol in the “image” column for each vocabulary word. Check in with the class to see which pictures were difficult to come up with, ask some students to share their best drawings by sketching them on the white board, or help students come up with ideas, making sure they have correctly recorded the meaning of each word.
Lead students through the attached PowerPoint presentation. Words in red are given vocabulary words. Words in blue are words that should be checked with class for comprehension, and might be chosen as additional vocabulary words if they are unknown. Engage students in generating ideas where there are question marks in text (NOT in headings).
Read Heart of Darkness pp.19-37, using whichever group reading techniques suit your classroom. (Choral reading, popcorn reading, taking turns, jump-in reading, teacher reading, small group reading, simultaneous silent reading) Relate characters, events and places to PowerPoint presentation. Update Story Timeline & Character Profile displays.
Students work individually or in small groups to complete Section 1 of the history book chapter on imperialism.
Check in with groups and review their answers to the section assessment.
