### Lesson Objective

I can write function rules from a table

### Lesson Plan

Standard 6.PRA.8 - Recognize when information given in a table, graph, or formula suggests a proportional or linear relationship. 6.PRA.9 - Produce and interpret graphs that represent the relationship between two variables (x and y) in everyday situations Objective Essential Question SWBAT write function rules from a table with 80% accuracy. Explain how patterns suggest a relationship. What kind of relationships do they suggest? Justify.

10 minutes

Daily Math Review (Warm-Up/ Do Now)

Solve each equation

1. X + 4 = -6
2. A + (-3) = 17
3. 7t = 112
4. 36 + 2p = 118
5. Complete the following equation with one operation followed by one number

2 ____   ______ = 12

Complete the Daily Review problems

Explain

(Guided Practice)

A function is a relationship that assigns exactly one output value for each input value.  The variables x and y are often used to represent input and output.  Output = Input

Present the following table to students:

 x y 0 1 1 5 2 9 3 13

Lead a discussion with students on how to determine the pattern for the input (x) and output (y).

Actively listening and trying to determine the function rule of the table

15 minutes

Explore (Conceptual Development)

On index cards have a function table and a matching pattern for x and y.  Distribute index cards to students.

Find their match, but before doing so they must determine the pattern (if they have the table) and if they have the pattern construct the table.

15 minutes

Extend/ Elaborate

Assign students practice problems to complete (problems 1- 21 odd)

Evaluate

(Assessment/ Closure)

Write a rule for each sequence. Then find the next three terms

1. 7, 14, 21, 28
2. -4, 12, -36, 108

For exercise 3-5 use the table

1. Find the values of m and n
2. 4. Write a rule for the function
3. Find the value of y for x = 11
 x y 2 7 4 13 5 M 7 22 n 28
