Tell students to record the meaning of "mixed number" in math journals:
Opening
State objective
Explicitly tell students that a mixed number is a whole number and a fraction.
Direct Instruction
Show example of mixed number on the white board.

"One and one-third" |
Use fraction circles to model 1 1/3. Show 1-whole circle and 1/3 circle beside it. Explain how each part of the model related to each part of the mixed number. Is the whole amount greater than or less than 1? Allow for a student to answer greater than 1.

Model for students how to write the following as a mixed number.
*Be sure to address the fact that 1 whole is ten-tenths.
