Module title:  Section A – Forces and Motion

Lesson title:  Chapter 1 Movement and Position

Time allocated: 2 weeks [2 singles, 2 doubles, 2 preps]

 Book References: Edexcel iGSCE Physics – Arnold, Woolley and Johnson (2009) Ordinary Level Physics – Abbott (1970) Learning outcomes for ALL students (“MUST” and “SHOULD”): To be able to understand, provide unit, word and symbol equations for, apply the equations to basic calculations for: speed, velocity, acceleration. To know how to draw and interpret D-T and V-T graphs. To understand that velocity and speed are not the same.  Know the difference between vector and scalar quantity. To know how to measure velocity, acceleration using air track and ticker tape machines. Learning outcomes for most able students (“COULD”): Not sure yet! Practical Experiments (with techno list and precautions other than usual): 1. Tickertape: ramps, blocks to change ramp angle, ticker tape machines, tape, trolleys, sellotape, lots of scissors and glue.   Practical Demonstrations (with techno list and precautions other than usual): Cockroach and turtle – trick but you can put a piece of card on their back and see if you can encourage to go through a light gate. Calculation of a student’s speed: Tape measure 50m, stop watches. Air track: with one trolley and 2 light gates + PC controller. Other resources, including videos (title and number), books and worksheets – please be clear and specific:  1.      White boards and pens Lesson notes: (brief, relevant description of lesson where Class Practicals (CP), Class Demos (CD), Worksheets (WS) etc can be referred to by the initials and the numbers assigned in boxes above)   (Double lesson): Speend, Velocity, D-T graphs Starter: (15 minutes) Cockroach V turtle (don’t demo yet, perhaps something to think about when you look at measurement next lesson) – how would we determine which goes the fastest? Go through the slides for Distance, Time, Speed.  Makes students write down “How to calculate the speed” slide as their notes. Look at text book: what is the difference between instantaneous and average speed?   Main: (10 minutes) Calculating speed, using several students, writing their results using the table in the PPT. As indoors you can make them hop across the room or walk with one foot in front of the other to keep the speed down! (15 minutes) Do 4 easy calculations and then 3 harder ones if the class is going quickly – perhaps make the last 3 a quiz amongst tables. (10 minutes) Distance Time graphs, write notes from principle slide.  Do example with class of the journey to school.  Hand out mini white boards  and do the 100m race – but do the questions really fast – it is a race after all! Refer back to instantaneous and average velocity. Extra PPT slide – bouncing ball – can they guess this?     Plenary: (20 minutes) So we’ve done speed, but there is also this quantity called velocity.  Difference? PPT slide has 2 pictures.  Look at page 3 – 4 in the book, read and now explain the difference, attribute speed and velocity to the correct aspects of the pictures and tell me which is a scalar/vector quantity and why. Write this up on the board and use notes on next PPT slide which has the equation on.     ***********************************   (Single lesson) Acceleration and measurement Starter: PPT slide with the 3 cars – how can we measure the quality of these cars for comparison? Top speed? Breaking time?  How about acceleration…can they put them in order of lowest to highest acceleration?  How did they think this through in their head? Suggestions?   Main: PPT slides: notes for acceleration and formula.  Look at textbook, p 4-5. Go through example and consider what deceleration means. Now calculate the accelerations for each car – where they right?  Was the order correct? So how do we go about measuring quantities such as velocity and acceleration? PPT slide of Galileo’s experiment.  How did this work? Use the book to help. Introduces the concept of UNIFORM acceleration.   Plenary: Now we can use better technology: show air track.  Explain how this works.  How would they set it up to calculate: average speed, instantaneous speed and acceleration? What would happen if I nudged the trolley, gave it a jolly good thonk or tilted the air track? If time can work out the instantaneous and average velocities of cockroaches (turtles are stubborn and usually refuse to move.  Roaches move well if chocolate put in front of them and a tap on the backside with a pen).     *********************************************   (Double lesson) V-T graphs, ticker tape measurements Starter: (15minutes) Explaining how a ticker tape machine works.  Do worksheet on how ticker tape is interpreted. WS JAB Tickertape. (10 minutes)Setting up experiment on the board.  Aim is to calculate the uniform acceleration of a trolley for 2 different ramp angles. Note the method down.   Main: (20 minutes) Get the data, look at the tape and then before writing the results, add in the theory PPT slide on V-T graphs. Many find this very hard, so really slow down and ensure they know how to do this.  (15 minutes) Now work out the acceleration for both sets (or 1 if the class are excitable or slow).  Need graph paper and explain very carefully and put example under the camera.  Emphasise that they must cut the tape and stick as they go along.  Too many cut the whole tape up and then lose bits.  PPT slide of  a V-T graph with different/numerous lines on.  What do they mean?
