Lesson Objective
SWBAT multiply whole numbers with decimals.
Lesson Plan
Materials Needed: DN Worksheet, white board, dry erase markers, student slate boards, and IND Worksheet.
Vocabulary: multiplication, array, model, group, counting, product, multiple, addition
……….
Do Now (3 -5 min): Teacher hands a DN Worksheet to every student and asks the students to complete the worksheet independently.
Opening (2 -3 min): Teacher quickly reviews answers to the Do Now and then says, “Today, we are going to continue learning about multiplication strategies, but we are going to begin multiplying with decimals. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to multiply whole numbers with decimals.”
Direct Instruction (10 min) The teacher begins by telling the students that multiplying whole numbers with decimals is very similar to multiplying whole numbers with more than one place value ONLY, you have to remember to count up the decimals. The teacher continues, “Let me show you the steps to multiplying with decimals and then I will model a problem for you.”
The teacher writes on the board, or has prepared on a chart:
1. Rewrite the problem so the decimals are aligned
2. Multiply the tenths place
3. Multiply the ones place
4. Count up decimal places
5. Put decimal in product according to necessary decimal places. In this case, it would be 2 decimal points or the hundredths place
The teacher then models the following two problems with the steps.
1.9 x 0.4 = ?
4.3 x 0.5 = ?
Guided Practice (10 min): The teacher then hands out slate boards to the students. The teacher writes the following problems on the board/chart for the students to work on their slate boards. The class should complete each problem together and hold up their slate boards for the teacher to see.
2.3 x .7 = ?
3.5 x 0.4 = ?
6.1 x 0.2 = ?
3.8 x 0.3 = ?
4.7 x .5 = ?
Independent Practice (10 min): Each student is given the IND Worksheet and asked to complete it individually and turn it in.
Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to ask what they learned about.
