Topic and Position Frames:

AC: Israel is a tiny country that can barely defend itself from its aggressive neighbors.

AC: Arab countries isolate and threaten Israel and it needs military action and settlements for its security.

AR: Israel does not threaten, but it will not suffer violent attacks in silence.

X: Before peace agreements started, Arab neighboring countries wanted to defeat Israel, but after several conflicts these countries now treat Israel peacefully.

X: Without support from neighboring countries, Palestinians do not have the ability to stop settlements, and they need international law to help them keep their land.

NC: Israel has shown time and again that it wants to acquire more territory by any means necessary.

NC: Israel has ignored international law in continuing to take over land and threaten neighboring countries.

NR: Israel has by far more military power than the Palestinians and claims to be the victim in order to justify military actions.

Vocabulary:

Six Day War

Yom Kippur War

Settlements/colonies

Aggressor

Lesson Reflection:

What went well?

What would you change?

What needs explanation?

Students are appropriately confused by the muddle accounts, but are receptive to direction on "who do they say the aggressor is?"

Again, it can help to pare down readings to paragraphs or sentences.

Settlements, Six Day War and, sometimes, Yom Kippur War have become known terms in the West. They have biases, but I chose not to dwell on these so as to limit confusion.
