Intro: 2 min

MATERIALS:

1) Quick Questions / Do Now (Cumulative Review and Geared for Quick Success) 3-5 minutes

1)  Who can remind the class what we worked on yesterday? (SW raise hands to provide answer: We talked about the lesson that Sophie learned from the resolution of the story.)

2) Students go over the AIMS and AGENDA for the class (on the board) 30 seconds to 1 minute

3) Mini-Lesson / Modeling (“I” or “I/We”) 5-15 minutes

  • Scholars, yesterday we talked about the lesson that Sophie learned from this story.
  • Who can remind the class what that lesson is? (SW raise hands to provide answer: Sophie learned that she can get angry sometimes but her family still loves her/cares about her.)
  • Exactly! Today we are going to be making a text-to-self connection with the way Sophie feels.
  • I’ve been noticing that we’ve been making “okay” text-to-self connections but we haven’t made fantastic text-to-self connections. Today we will work on making fantastic text-to-self connections.
  • Remember, a text-to-self connection is when we find something in the book that reminds us of something in our lives.
  • We make text-to-self connections because it helps us to relate or connect to the characters. When we connect to the characters we understand the story better.
  • TW demo making a T2S connection on blown up exit slip. TW walk through the think-aloud process and also emphasize bad T2S connections vs. good T2S connections.
  • When I make a text-to-self connection I want to make sure that I talk about the book first. If I just write about my life, nobody will understand how that connects to the story.
  • TW ask Ss questions about her T2S: Does it include something from the book? Did I make a good T2S? Did I include a drawing from the book and a drawing from my life? Did I just copy something from the book? (i.e. not really made a T2S)

Key Vocabulary 0-5 minutes, interwoven

4) Guided Practice (“We”) 5-20 minutes

  • SW TPS about their T2S connection.
  • SW share out full group before going back to their desks.

Key questions to check for understanding during GP: (Level 1 and Level 2)

5) Way to Check for Understanding before Independent Practice 1-3 minutes (proceed only if class masters)

What are we working on today? (SW raise hands to provide answer: making a text-to-self connection with When Sophie…)

6) Independent (or pair / small group) Practice (“You”):

15-25 minutes

  • SW return to their desks and make a T2S connection on exit slip.
  • TW circulate and underwrite/assist scholars if necessary.

7) Cumulative Review

T should ask Ss to make T2S connections with RC books, GR books etc.

8) Homework

Have scholars make a T2S connection with a character from a book they are reading at home.

9) Exit Slip / Final Assessment of FIRM MASTERY of the Aim:  1-5 minutes

SW make a T2S connection with Sophie.

Lesson Reflection

What went well?

Scholars were successful because they had spent time making T2S connections. They were familiar with it and this character. Sophie has an easily relatable feeling.

What would you change?

Make sure scholars are making deep connections, not just superficial ones. Make sure to model a great T2S so scholars will understand what is expected of them.

What needs explanation?

Remind scholars that in order to make a great T2S connection they need to connect to the character feeling/experience.
