MATERIALS:

1) Quick Questions / Do Now (Cumulative Review and Geared for Quick Success) 3-5 minutes 

1)  Who can remind the scholars what we worked on yesterday? (SW raise hands to provide answer: Yesterday we talked about the way Sophie changed from the beginning of the story to the end.)

2) Students go over the AIMS and AGENDA for the class (on the board) 30 seconds to 1 minute 

3) Mini-Lesson / Modeling (“I” or “I/We”) 5-15 minutes

·         Scholars yesterday we talked about the way Sophie changed from the beginning of the story to the end.

·         Today we are going to focus on the resolution.

·         Who can remind the group what the resolution is? (SW raise hands to provide answer: the resolution is the outcome or the ending that ties the story together.)

·         Exactly! The resolution is what ties the story together.

·         Turn to your neighbor and remind them of the resolution in When Sophie…

·         SW TPS and TW select 1-2 scholars to share out: the resolution is that Sophie goes on a walk and calms down etc.

4) Guided Practice (“We”) 5-20 minutes

·         Let’s talk some more about what we think the characters learned from the ending of this book.

·         TW re-read ending pages.

·         SW think about what lesson Sophie learned.

·         SW TPS with a neighbor to share their thoughts about the lesson that Sophie learned.

·         TW select 2-3 scholars to share out. (Sophie learned that her family loves her, they care about her, she can be mad and then calm down etc.)

·         You are now going to go back to your seats and tell me what lesson you think Sophie learned.

Key questions to check for understanding during GP: (Level 1 and Level 2)

5) Way to Check for Understanding before Independent Practice 1-3 minutes (proceed only if class masters)

Turn to a neighbor and remind them what we are going to be working on at our desks. (SW raise hands and provide answer: we will be working on explaining what lesson Sophie learned from the outcome of the story.

6) Independent (or pair / small group) Practice (“You”):

15-25 minutes

·         SW return to their desks and complete G.O. about the lesson Sophie learned.

7) Cumulative Review

T should ask Ss to explain how the lesson can be what the character learns in RC, GR books.   

8) Homework

Have scholars explain the lesson a character learned from the resolution about a book they are reading at home.

9) Exit Slip / Final Assessment of FIRM MASTERY of the Aim:  1-5 minutes

Insist that scholars first explain the resolution and then the lesson the character learned (as opposed to scholars saying both of these things in 1 sentence)
