Problems in Fiction Unit
Mini-Lesson: Fiction is about problems. Every fiction book has at least one problem in it.
Materials:
- Familiar Read Alouds
- Post-Its
- Book Baggies with leveled fiction books
Connection: Scholars, we have been talking about fiction for the past few lessons, but today we are going to start really learning all about what makes fiction so special. Today we are going to learn more about how fiction books all have at least one problem in them.
Teach: Scholars, the biggest thing that makes fiction so special is that, unlike nonfiction books, every single fictional story has at least one big problem, and the whole book is about that big problem. A good reader can find the big problem so that they will have an easier time understanding the whole fictional story since it is about that big problem. Sometimes, even, a fictional story is so complex that it has more than one big problem in them that the reader has to understand in order to understand the book. But, no matter what, in every fictional story you read, there is always at least one big problem that frames the rest of the story.
Active Engagement: I am going to give you and a partner one of our fictional read aloud books and one post-it. Your job is to find at least one big problem that the whole story is about to show how all fictional books have at least one big problem in them. Make sure that the big problem you find is one that the whole book is about, not an itty bitty problem that only some of the book is about. (pair students and have them find the big problem in familiar read alouds; reconvene students and briefly go over the big problem in the chosen books) Scholars, did you notice that every single one of our fictional read alouds had a big problem? That’s because all fictional stories have a big problem because that’s what makes fiction so special.
Link: Today during reading workshop, I want you to think about how all fictional stories have a big problem. When you are reading one of your fictional stories, you can try to figure out what the big problem in the story is to help you understand the story better.
