Lesson Objective

Writers help their readers understand the text by organizing their text in logical ways. Introductions, tables of contents, headings, and paragraph divisions are tools that they use to help their readers. Readers decide what a paragraph is all about (the topic of the paragraph). They make sure the topic of the paragraph isn’t too big or too small an idea.

Lesson Plan

Point: Writers help their readers understand the text by organizing their text in logical ways.  Introductions, tables of contents, headings, and paragraph divisions are tools that they use to help their readers.  Readers decide what a paragraph is all about (the topic of the paragraph).  They make sure the topic of the paragraph isn’t too big or too small an idea.

Link: Yesterday, we talked about how readers can figure out the topic of a paragraph by thinking what this paragraph is all about.  Then we used those topics to think about important supporting details.  Today, I want to teach you that when readers decide the topic of their paragraph, they make sure their topic is just right – that it isn’t too big or too small.

Teaching: Readers, just like some main ideas are too big and some are too small (and some are just different ideas), some paragraph topics are too big and some are too small.  Just right paragraph topics are ones that tell exactly what the paragraph is all about.  Watch how I make sure that I come up with a just-right topic for the next section in “The First Bicycles.”  [Read paragraph 3].  Hmm… I think this paragraph is all about high wheelers.  Wait, now that I think about it, maybe that is too big an idea because this paragraph doesn’t tell me everything about high wheelers.  No, I think that it is about tricycles.  Let me reread the paragraph and check.  [Reread paragraph.]  No, now I think that topic is too small.  One sentence was about tricycles, but the whole paragraph isn’t about tricycles.  Now, I think the topic is women riding different bikes because of their skirts.  That seems just right to me because the whole paragraph is about women riders and their skirts.  Okay, so that is a just right topic.

Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn to try it.  I will read you the first paragraph on page 6.  Then you and your partner have to think of a just right topic for this paragraph.  Make sure your topic isn’t too big or too small.  It should tell exactly what the paragraph is all about.  [Pass out article.  Read paragraph.  Then give 1 minute of think time.] T&T and work together to figure out what this paragraph is all about.   [Share out from each group]

Link: Readers, any time that you think of the topic of a paragraph, make sure your topic isn’t too big or too small but that it is a just right topic.  Today, if anyone takes the time to figure out the topic of a paragraph, you can share it with us.

Share: Have students read the paragraph and then say their topic.

Materials: All About Bikes.
