Lesson: Main Idea: Using Conclusion
Point: Readers can use the conclusion or the final section to figure out what the author is trying to teach them.
Connection: Yesterday, you learned that readers need to understand what each section is about. Today you will learn that readers use the conclusion or the final section to figure out what the author is trying to teach them.
Teaching: There is so much information in every non-fiction book. At the end of a non-fiction book the author tells you one more time what you were supposed to learn. The last section of a non-fiction book always has a
Let me show you what I mean in How Do Animals Adapt? This section is called, “Adapting to People” (page 30) I know this section is going to be an important conclusion to the book because the title of this section is like the title of the book. I’ve also learned in this book that animals adapt (change) lots of things about themselves. Sometimes they change their bodies and sometimes they change they things they do. Animals have had to change many things about themselves because of us. This section is all about the good things and bad things that people have done to animals. This is a very important section that the author has left until the end of the book. The author wants you to learn that animals change for many reasons but also that we as people have to make sure that we think about what we do and how it makes animals change.
Did you notice how I thought carefully about the last section of the book?
Did you notice how I stopped and learned the message that the author was trying to tell me?
Active Engagement: Take out the non-fiction book you have been working on. Turn to the conclusion or the last section of the book. Quietly read the heading of the last section. Raise your hand if you know what the author want you to learn from this important last section?
Link: When you read non-fiction, you need to stop and think about the last section or conclusion of the book. Think about what the author is trying to teach you by using the last section of the book. Today you will be using the last section of the book to write about what the author has taught you on a post-it note.
Share: Who can raise their hand and share their post-it note.
