Lesson: Measuring Length
Lesson Objective
Lesson Plan
DO NOW: Look at your staircase worksheet from yesterday's class to determine if millimeter and centimeter are relatively large or small metric units.
Review DO NOW: Centi and milli are relatively small metric units. Milli- is 1/1000th (.001) of a meter and Centi- is 1/100th (.01) of a meter.
State the lesson objectives: Today students will be able to measure length using a metric ruler
Show PowerPoint presentation on measuring length.
Next: Model measuring for the students. Do several examples under an overhead projector or a document camera/LCD setup.
Next: Have students practice measuring (Measuring length student worksheet 1) with their partner. Partners can check the other's work to confirm proper measuring. Teacher circulates from group to group.
Next: Review answer as a class and address issues.
Homework: (Homework sheet 1)
Reflection:
Plan to have students check-in with each other when they are making measurements. This will make your life easier, as you will have difficulty checking in with everyone during class. You'll soon identify the students who need frequent check-ins and you'll hover near them. Modeling is very important. While modeling be sure the talk aloud. Practice this skill regularly to maintain student proficiency.
