Lesson Objective

By the end of the lesson, SWBAT display their knowledge of the topic immigration at the turn of the 20th century. By the end of the lesson, SWBAT display their knowledge of the topic America’s rise to power at the turn of the 20th century.

Lesson Plan

 

KEY POINTS.


·       William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States

·       William McKinley was very aggressive when it came to the way he approached the world.

·       William McKinley is known for being the President during the Spanish-American War, annexing Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

·       This was the first time that America extended its territory beyond the boarders of the continental United States.

·       The United States was able to expand its influence around the world because they were very powerful economically.

·       Immigrants came to United States at the turn of the 20th century for many reasons.

·       Immigrants came to the U.S. to escape famine, and poverty in their home countries.

·       Immigrants came to the U.S. to try their hand at achieving the American Dream and capitalizing on the boom of the big business.

·       Immigrants came to the U.S. to join their families that moved in waves.

·       Many Immigrants came from Europe because of the extensive famine in Ireland, and the disparity in wealth.

 

·       Essential Questions: “Why did an immigrant come to America at the turn of the 20th century?” “How did big business and the Panama Canal change America?” “How did the Spanish-American War change American?”

ASSESSMENT.  

 

At the end of the lesson, T will assess the Ss knowledge of America’s expansion and immigration at the turn of the 20th century through two written exams and a fact book on the subject.

  

CONNECTION TO THE GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARD

 

SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the

century.

 

c. Explain how William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt expanded America’s

role in the world; include the Spanish-American War and the building of the

Panama Canal.

d. Describe the reasons people emigrated to the United States, from where they

emigrated, and where they settled.

1. OPENING ( 5 min.) (Engage/Explore)

 

Teacher:

·       At the start of the lesson, T will put the following starter on the board: “What are some final questions that you may have about America’s rise to power or immigration to America at the turn of the century?”

·       T will have the Ss write their starter, and share out their questions.

·       T will introduce the students to the lesson and go over the objectives of the lesson:

Student

·       Ss will complete their starter

·       Ss will share their responses.

·       Ss will internalize the objective for the day.

2. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (10 min.) (Explain)

 

Teacher:

·       T will give the Ss instructions about the two different exams that they will be taking during the class period

·       T will explain that the Ss will start by taking the American Expansion Exam.

·       T will explain that after they are done with that first exam, they will turn it in and receive the second exam on immigration.

·       T will let the Ss know that when they turned in the second exam, Ss are supposed to create a fact book either on American expansion or immigration at the turn of the 20th century.

·       T will review the directions of the fact book and brainstorm ideas with the Ss as a means to review and introduce the in-class project.

Students:

·       Ss will listen to the directions for what they are to do during the class period.

3. GUIDED PRACTICE (40 min.) (Extend)

 

Teacher:

·       T will then hand out the first exam

·       T will have the Ss begin the exam.

·       T will monitor the room while the Ss take the exam

Students:

·       Ss will take the exam

4. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (30min.) (Evaluate)

 

Teacher:

·       After the Ss finish taking their exams, T will hand out the fact book template

·       T will encourage the Ss to read the directions before they begin their fact book

·       T will help those Ss that seem confused by the directions.

Students:

·       Ss will create a fact book about America’s expansion or immigration at the turn of the century.

5. CLOSING (5 min.)

 

Teacher:

·       As a closing T will have a few Ss share out their fact books

·       T will tell the Ss that next lessons, SW learn World War I  

·       T will remind Ss of their homework.

 Student:

·       Students will share out their fact books.

·       Students will ask any last minute questions.

·       Students will pay attention to topic of next lesson.

HOMEWORK (if appropriate).  

Social Studies Project on Immigration (if they haven’t turned it in already)
