Lesson: Sorting and Defining Terms
Objective: Students will be able to identify all of the terms by finding examples of each non-fiction literary term.
Do-Now: list as many non-fiction text features terms that you can and write down the benefit you think each one is for knowing what it is and why it is important.
Connection: There are many non-fiction terms and elements and it might be hard to keep them sorted, so today we are going to work on the definitions. It is important for us to be able to define things so that we can understand what they are and why they are important but also that when they are referenced in a test we know exactly what the test is referencing us.
With the class define all of the definitions of the non-fiction terms.
Define non-fiction terms:
Caption: text describing the contents of a picture, graph or chart
Make a list on chart paper.
Guided Practice/independent Work:
Students will be given the terms sheet and the terms definition sheet cut up into baggies. They will have to sort the terms and paste them on the definitions.
They can also make text feature flash cards that are highlighted and make the pictures of those that are examples and then put them on their baggies.
