Lesson Plan

Objective:  Readers sort information from a text by looking at the timeline and asking themselves, “What happened first?”

Do-Now:  Use ten lines of your paper then write out all of the ten most events in your life.  Write them in order.

Connection:  A biography is a story or passage about a persons life.  Sometimes in biographies an author chooses to include a timeline so the reader will have a better idea of the sequence of events in a person’s life. Timelines are important because they put important events an order.

Teach/Model:  When we look at a timeline we put events in orders on a timeline.  A timeline helps us figure out the order events happened.   When we look at events in a story we can put them in a timeline or we can look at a timeline to help us figure out how the events of a story happened.  There are different ways timelines can be arragnged and timelines can be arranged horizontally vertically, they can be shown by details of events, or by pictures of events.

Show some examples of timelines.

Guided Practice:  Ask students questions based on a timeline of a person that you are viewing.

Model looking at a passage and creating a timeline or looking at a timeline and answering questions.

Independent Practice: Looking at a timeline and writing down the order major events happened.  Asking questions

Students will create their own timelines based on events that happend in their life or they will write  a timeline based on a biography of someone they are reading about.

Link:  When you see a timeline of events about a persons life or about a passage ask yourself what events happen next?
