Lesson: Prefix Addition
Lesson Objective
Lesson Plan
Objective : Students will be able to identify common prefixes and suffixes and how they affect the meanings of those words.
Do-Now: Teacher will demonstrate a suffix and prefix pair. For example a teacher writes something on the board, and then asks the students what they just did. They say : You just wrote something. Then the teacher writes the same thing again. What did I do this time? You rewrote it. What did I originally do. The word rewrite is an example of the base word write with the prefix re added to it, the prefix re means to do again. So when I add a prefix I change the meaning of a word.
Mini-Lesson/ Guided Practice: (12 min.)What is prefix suffix. Prefixes come at the beginning of a word and change the meaning of a base word. Suffixes come at the end of a word and change the meaning of that word. Think of the word pre and how it means to pre-heat, pre-game. Pre means before so the word prefix means before the word.
Independent Practice: (10 min.) Students complete a prefix suffix addition problem worksheet where they have to think of a base word and then add a prefix or suffix to make a new word poster.
Example: prefix + root word = new word
Suffix + root word = new word
Then they must create a poster with 5 of each.
Assessment: (3 min): prefix suffix poster
Center 1: Read a leveled reader and students complete graphic organizer.
|
Center 2: Students write on a white sentence strip the prefix, on colored strips they write the root words. Use them in sentences create a pre-fix suffix ring. |
Center 3: Make note cards that have prefixes and suffixes and the definitions on them. They have to write out a group of cards and then see how many they can memorize with a partner. |
