Lesson: Vocabulary in Harry Potter
-I introduce the vocabulary before we read the chapter. We read the sentence together and use the context and word parts to determine the part of speech. Then, students independently make a guess on the meaning (again, using context and now part of speech). We share students predictions and then I give them the correct definition.
I post the words on sentence strips afterwards and leave a few inches of blank paper after each word. Then, everytime a student reads one of these words or uses it in his or her own writing, we add a tally.
