Lesson Plan

Lesson Name: The Lay of the Land                        Course: High School Language Arts by Anke al-Bataineh

Objective: Students will know the relative location of Iran and identify geographical influences on the region

Essential Questions:            (write on board)

Where is Iran?

What is the land like?

What areas surround Iran?

Materials:
Prior Knowledge Frame

Iran Geography Packet (cut into puzzles)

BBC articles on 4 topics

Cause/Effect and Timeline Organizer

Anticipatory Set:         (10 mins)                                    Intrapersonal
Present students with the Prior Knowledge Frame and demonstrate how to fill it out. The more familiarity your students have with the subject, the more independently they can work. For students with very limited background, you might project the organizer and fill it out as a group, reminding them of commonly known facts.

Input:         (15 mins)                                    Kinesthetic, Visual, Interpersonal
Distribute geography packets to groups of 3-5 students, with the first map printed on cardstock or cardboard and cut into pieces. Allow students to assemble the map. As you circulate, engage them in pronouncing the names of the surrounding countries and bringing up any prior knowledge about them.

Guided Practice:         (40 min)                           Verbal, Visual, Logical
Divide class into four groups with heterogenous reading levels. Give each group one BBC article and two graphic organizers and highlighters. Instruct them to read the article and highlight the most interesting and important ideas about Iran. They can then choose the best way to organize these ideas; as cause
and effect or as a timeline.

As you circulate, discuss the main ideas and the choice of organizers with the groups.

When all groups are ready,  initiate a teaching rotation, wherein one representative of each group rotates through the other groups and teaches them about the graphic organizer they created. Students listening to the “teachers” should challenge themselves to organize their notes logically for their own purposes.

Conclusion/Assessment:         (10 min)                  Verbal, Interpersonal
Teach students the idea of a “buzz around.” Ask each student to complete one of these sentences briefly, in the order in which they are seated.

Vocab to Watch Out For:

Persia

Farsi

Middle East

Muslim

Revolution

Lesson Reflection:

What went well?

What would you change?

What needs explanation?

Students were able to extract at least a couple of ideas from each visual aide.

ELL students struggled with the articles, and the highlighters help, but they might benefit from something even more simply worded.

Try to orchestrate verbal and visual roles in ways that allow students to show their strengths.

If your students work fast, they might finish all of this in a class period. If your students work more slowly, they can present their graphic organizers to each other during the following class period.
