### Lesson Objective

SWBAT determine the rule in a growth pattern

### Lesson Plan

Materials Needed: scrap paper, white board, dry erase markers, pencils, Do Now worksheet, Example Chart, IND worksheet

Do Now (3 -5 min): The teacher passes out the DN worksheet and asks the students to complete it quickly and quietly.

Opening (2 -3 min): Teacher opens by reviewing the answers to the Do Now. The teacher then states the objective, “Today we are going to review a certain type of pattern. We will look at the pattern and determine the rule. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to determine the rule in a growth pattern.”

Direct Instruction (10 min): Teacher posts the first example from the Example Chart. The teacher should explain that the growth pattern that is occurring in the steps is really just a visual representation of a numerical pattern. The teacher should write the number of blocks for each step under each column and then see if any of the students can determine the rule by looking at the number (add 1). If the students struggle to find the pattern, then the teacher should walk them through how to solve the pattern and find the rule. The teacher should emphasize that growth patterns are predictable and they grow in accordance with the rule.

Guided Practice (6-8 min): The teacher should post the second example from the chart and ask the students to find the rule for the growth pattern in small groups of two or three students. When they have finished, the teacher should review their work (the rule for the pattern is add 2).

Independent Practice (10 min): The teacher gives each student their own worksheet to complete.

Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to quickly review the answers to the Independent Practice worksheet/ ask what we learned about.
