Lesson Objective

Students will be able to recognize plot elements in short stories and analyze characters- their traits, motivations, conflicts, points of view, relationships, and changes.

Do Now

Students will complete one of the reading comprehension exercises in the do now packet.



Today we will begin analyzing "Tell Tale Heart" by looking at the theme, mood and tone of this short story.  First we will take reveiw a PowerPoint which will define and identfy the theme in a novel or short story.

Direct Instruction:
Teacher will show students the theme powerpoint.  
When the PowerPoint is over students will complete a guided notes activity defining:

  • Theme
  • Mood
  • Tone

Guided Practice:
Teacher will lead a class discussion in identifying the tone and mood words in the story.  Students & Teacher will make a class anchor chart with the tone and mood words from the text.

Independent Practice:
Students will work in groups to discuss the mood of "Tell Tale Heart". 
Students will use these tone and mood words to come up with what they believe is the theme of this short story and write that down
Teacher will remind students that there may be more than one theme.
Groups will share out what they came up with for the theme.
