Lesson Plan

Objective:  Students will be able to utilize pictures and captions to make predictions about non-fiction texts.

Do-Now:  think of a favorite photo you have, do a short sketch of that photo, then write a caption for that photo.  After you have written a caption, write a prediction someone might have if they saw your picture and had to make a prediction.

Connection:  Photos are always used to enhanced readings.  I think most of us would prefer to read a story in a picture book rather then in a test text any day. Pictures are strategically placed in books to make the books more interesting.  Just like in fiction text non fiction texts can also have  pictures represented to show or enhance the message the author is trying to state.  Today we are going to look at how we can explore pictures and especially when reading non-fiction texts we need to understand that pictures and captions are another way that authors are teaching and giving us information so it is important that we pay attention to them.

Teach/Model:

It is easy for us to locate pictures in text we sometimes spend time looking at them, glancing over them, but we should really analyze and take time to understand what those pictures are showing us.  It is also an important part of predicting what a non-fiction text is going to be about.

Model with students:  predicting looking a non-fiction text or passage using the pictures and captions.

Model with students:  reading a text and then going back over the text and looking at pictures an captions.

Create a chart paper organizer that is a chart where you fill in picture, caption, and then prediction.

Model using a non-fiction text or non-fiction passage as to how you can use the picture and the caption to make predictions.

Model a few for the students.

Then do a few guided practices photos.

Independent practice:  give students a couple different types of non-fiction texts and then can do this caption/picture activity based on: magazines, articles, newspapers, non-fictions texts, non-fiction books, brochures.  They can also  fill this out using one text or one book.
