Purpose of Learning

Today’s purpose of learning is to recognize words where you have to drop the final e when you add an ending.

Connection

“Today we are starting a new unit.  We are going to be learning about words where you have to drop the final e to add a suffix, or a new ending.”

Script

I Do

Chart: When to drop the final e to add a suffix

T: “I know that that when I want to add a suffix/ending to a word that ends in an e, I have to drop that e before adding the ending.  Some of these endings include –es, -ed, -ing, -ness,     -able.” (Fill in chart as you go)

S: Participate in a call-response chant to remember endings

T: “Now I want you to listen to me think about how I would change these words to add an ending and make a new word.”

Chart: Examples and Non-Examples of final e words

T: Think aloud your own thought process of whether the word has a final e, what you want the new word to be, and whether or not you have to drop a letter to make that new word.

We Do

S: Participate in a turn and talk with a list of words. “Would you have to drop the final letter to make a new ending?”

You Do/Assessment

T: Point to a new list of words (one at a time).

S: Thumbs up/down …Would you drop a letter in this word to add one of the endings on my chart?
