Lesson Objective

SWBAT use a calculator to rename fractions as percents.

Lesson Plan

Materials Needed: scrap paper for DN, calculators (one for each student), white board, dry erase markers, pencils, Fraction/Percent/Decimal Concentration game (multiple copies if breaking class into groups), and DI/GP Worksheet, Exit Slip
Vocabulary: whole (or ONE or unit), denominator, numerator, equivalent, divide, fraction, percent, and decimal.

Do Now (3 -5 min): Each student has a calculator and scrap paper on his/her desk before starting math. The class reads the Do Now and then begins.
 
Experiment with the % key on your calculator. Find a way to rename 1 as a percent.

Opening (2 min): The teacher states the objective, “Yesterday, we learned about converting  fractions to  decimals. Today, we are going to convert fractions to percents. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use a calculator to rename fractions as percents.”
 
Direct Instruction / Guided Practice (15 min): The teacher begins the lesson by asking for volunteers to demonstrate how they converted the fraction to a percent. There are two ways to rename a fraction as a percent. If you are going to use that, or have calculators such as the TI-15 or the Casio fx-55 it should be done the following way:
 
TI-15:  1 [divide button] 4 [% button] [equal button] displays: 25
Casio fx-55: 1 [divide button] 4 [% button] displays: 25
 
Otherwise, the teacher should have the students practice dividing the numerator by the denominator and the multiplying the decimal by 100. 
 
- To rename 1 as a percent, divide 1 by 4 to get 0.25. Then multiply 0.25 by 100 to get 25%.           4
- To rename 33 as a percent, divide 33 by 75 to get 0.44. Then multiply 0.44 by 100 to get 44%.        75
 
The teacher can show an example chart, which can at the top of the IND Worksheet.
The teacher then asks the students to their knowledge of fractions, percents and decimals to complete the DI/GP Worksheet. The teacher completes questions 1 and 2 on the Worksheet with the students. Then the students pair up to complete problems 3-4. 
 
Independent (10 min):  The teacher passes out the IND worksheet, which mimics the Guided Practice. Students should complete it independently and turn it in.
 
Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class and hands to quickly review the objective for the day’s lesson.
