### Lesson Objective

SWBAT correctly identify the hour when the minute hand is past the 40 minute mark.

### Lesson Plan

Materials Needed: scrap paper for Do Now, teacher demonstration clock, students demonstration clock, IND Worksheet,
Vocabulary: minute hand, hour hand, minutes place, and hour.

Do Now (2 -3 min): The teacher writes the following analog clocks on the board/chart that demonstrate the following times. The students should be instructed to write the four times on scrap paper.

Opening (3-5 min): Teacher begins by reviewing the answers to the DN. The teacher should expect for students to have some of the times written incorrectly. Students have difficulty identifying the hour when the hour hand is approaching the next hour. The teacher should then state the objective. “Today we are going to review telling time to the hour. However, I am going to try to trick you. Most students have trouble with time when the minute hand is past the 40-minute mark. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to correctly identify the hour when the minute hand is past the 40 minute mark.”

Direct Instruction/ Guided Practice (10 – 12 min): Teacher begins by saying, “I have stressed for this whole unit that we need to pay attention to the hour and minute hand to correct tell time on analog clocks. Today we are paying attention to telling time when the minute hand is past the 40 minute mark, because that is where most students incorrectly identify the time. The reason that most of us have trouble with this is because the hour hand is soooo close to the next hour. HOWEVER, we have to think about how time works. Each hour has 60 minutes [The teacher should move the minute hand around the demonstration clock to each 5 minute increment]. So, we sometimes forget when the mintute hand is getting close to the 60 minute mark that we are NOT yet into the next hour. For example let’s look at our first Do Now question. Some people answered this question as 5:55. It is understandable why you might have answered this time as 5:55. The hour hand looks so close to the 5, but that is exactly it…. It is so close but not yet there. Let’s look at the clock again so we make sure we understand. [The teacher then moves the minute hand around the clock again to demonstrate.] Then the uses the demonstration clock to show the following times and asks the students the following questions:

1:55
3:50

The teacher asks the following questions:
Where is the long hand/minute hand pointing?
Where is the short hand pointing?
If the minute hand is past the 40 minute mark, what does that mean?
What time is it?

Independent Practice (10 min): The teacher hands out the IND Practice Worksheet. The students should complete the worksheet individually and then turn it into the teacher..

Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to quickly review the three ways to communication times to the half hour and demonstrate telling time on demonstration clock.
