Lesson: Copy of Rounding: Tens Place
SWBAT round whole numbers to the nearest tens place.
Materials Needed: DN Worksheet, white board, dry erase markers, Rounding Reminder Visual, IND Practice Worksheet
Vocabulary: rounding, estimation, actual, rounding off
Do Now (3 -5 min): Teacher hands a DN Worksheet to every student and asks the students to complete the worksheet independently.
Opening (2 -3 min): Teacher quickly reviews answers to the Do Now and then says, “Today, we are going to begin learning how to round numbers to a certain place value. We are going to talk about rounding and how rounding numbers can make estimation easier. By the end of this lesson, you will know how to round a number to the nearest tens place.”
Direct Instruction (10 min): Teacher begins “Today we are rounding numbers to the nearest ten. When we are rounding numbers, we need to remember a very important rule.” Teacher points to the Rounding Reminder Visual and says, “This chart is going to be important throughout our unit on rounding. You need to remember the information in this chart. If a number is 1,2,3,or 4, then you will round to down to the next tens unit. If the number is 5,6,7,8, or 9, then you will round up to the nearest tens unit. So, thinking of your Do Now, is the number 8 closer to 0 or closer to 10?  Good, when given the number 8, you would round up to the 10. Now, you might think that this is pretty easy, but you need to remember that you might be asked to round to the nearest 10 for a number larger than the number 10. For example, if I had the number 66 and I wanted to round it to the nearest 10, I need to know how to do that.”
Teacher writes the number 66 on the board and says, “Now, I want to round the number 66 to the nearest tens place. To do this, I am going to look at the unit of ten before my tens unit. For 66, I will look at the ones place. What number is in the ones place?  Great, and according to the Rounding Reminder Visual, will I round up or down if I have the number 6? [Up] Great, I will round the tens unit up. What number is in the tens unit?  That’s right, there is a 6 in the tens unit, so I will round that 6 up to 7 and I will have the number 70. So 66 rounded to the nearest tens place is 70.”
Guided Practice (10 min): The teacher continues, “Ok, so now it is your turn! We are going to practice rounding to the nearest tens together.” Teacher writes the following problems on the board and walks students through the process of rounding the numbers to the nearest tens just like during the Direct Instruction:

Independent Practice (10 - 15 min): Each student is given their own copy of the Independent Practice Worksheet and is asked to complete the worksheet on their own.
Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to quickly review the answers to the Independent Practice worksheet/ ask what we learned about.
