Pronouns are so often misused in speech that many people don't really know how to avoid pronoun errors in writing. Today we are going to learn how to use and write with pronouns.  
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. Misused pronouns call attention to themselves and detract from the message of a piece of writing. This lesson explains the basic principles of pronoun use and highlights the most common pronoun problems: agreement, case, noun-pronoun pairs, incomplete constructions, ambiguous pronoun references, and reflexive pronouns.

Direct Instruction:
Teacher will give a lecture on pronouns using the powerpoint attached.

Guided Practice:
Practice 1: Choosing The Correct Personal Pronoun
In the following sentences, choose the correct personal pronouns and identify them as subjective or objective pronouns.

  1. Our teacher Ms. Prim glared at Tom and (me, I).
  2. The other kids in the class laughed when (him and me; he and I) were sent out of the room.
  3. My classmates and I told our parents that (she, her) was a terrible teacher and that's why (we, us) were getting bad grades.
  4. Tom and (me, I) got to school late one day, and Ms. Prim made an example of (we, us) to the other kids by sending us to Study Hall.
  5. My parents and Tom's talked to Ms. Prim and promised that (he and I; him and me) would straighten up in the future.

Independent Practice
Practice 2: Using Correct Pronouns
Choose the correct pronouns in the following sentences.

  1. To become a good writer, you need to determine (what, which) is your ultimate goal.
  2. If you share your homework, to (whom, whose) should the teacher award the grade?
  3. To (who, whom) should you direct your questions about writing?
  4. Imagine that (your, you're) a famous poet; (who, whom) will you thank when you are accepting the Nobel Prize?
  5. Surely you will want to thank (your, you're) parents for all the support they gave you.
  6. My first attempts at poetry made (their, they're) way into the trash bin.
  7. When writing is going well, (it's, its) a true pleasure.
  8. Just between you and (I, me), I have always hated writing, but I'm beginning to change my mind.

Write a pargraph about a conversation you had yesterday making sure you use a variety of pronouns.
